On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and the European Union, GIZ is working with Viet Nam to achieve environmental, climate-neutral and inclusive development (just transition). Through this, it supports the protection of global public goods such as a clean environment and intact climate. Its priority areas are: 1)Climate change and the environment 2) Energy transition 3) Green economy and vocational education and training. For further information please visit our website: www.giz.de/viet-nam.

The GIZ is implementing the “Sustainable Agriculture for Forest Ecosystems” (SAFE) project, a flagship initiative under the newly established Team Europe Initiative (TEI) on Deforestation free Value Chains. This project cofinanced by the European Union, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Netherlands. In Viet Nam, SAFE is implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

SAFE Viet Nam focuses on coffee supply chain actors, with particular emphasis on smallholder farmers and indigenous group in Son La and Gia Lai provinces. The project works with relevant departments and local authorities to address capacity gaps that hinder the adoption of sustainable, legal, and deforestation-free production practices. Supply chains are reinforced to meet market and EUDR requirements, with emphasis on the responsibilities of exporting and importing companies and the integration of coffee farmers into traceability systems. In addition, the project strengthens smallholders and indigenous communities by improving their socio-economic conditions, enhancing knowledge of sustainable production practices, and raising awareness of land use rights. It also builds capacities to establish enabling conditions for compliance with EUDR and for the broader reduction of deforestation and forest degradation. The project further promotes multi-stakeholder engagement, knowledge management, and the application of gender-responsive approaches to ensure systemic and inclusive impact across the sector.
