WCS Viet Nam Program Overview

 

WCS has been working in Viet Nam since 2006, focusing on enhancing the commitment, capacity and actions of the government of Viet Nam to tackle the trafficking of wildlife, supporting national partners through developing and implementing highly focused, evidence-based strategies informed by an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of trafficking and the people involved to reduce the profits of crime and strengthen the risk of capture and sanctions. WCS Viet Nam have generated a wide range of reliable data on a number of related issues on illegal wildlife trade, trained and briefed about 4,500 law enforcement and judicial officers, policy makers, journalists, researchers and managers nation-wide and distributed a number of technical handbooks and guides. It has assisted central agencies in reviewing and proposing necessary changes to national legislation, criminal intelligence analysis systems, inter-agency cooperation. WCS Viet Nam has also facilitated Government to Government dialogue through multilateral and bi-lateral collaboration efforts, between Viet Nam and Asian, African and Latin American countries, to detect and respond to transnational illegal wildlife trade networks. Its wildlife health expertise has been leveraged to address unregulated wildlife trade and mitigation of pandemic threats through collaborative research, training, and policy development. In the past decade, WCS Viet Nam has also expanded to work with other conservation organizations and public laboratories towards finding and protecting Rafetus Swinhoei in the wild.

 

Job Summary

 

The intern is expected to provide support in basic online data collection and cleaning, maintain and enrich the professional wildlife-related database systems, which are mostly in English and carry out basic statistics and analysis.

 

Responsibilities

 

  1. Clean data gathered from wildlife product listings and other information from contracted data suppliers is entered into an information spreadsheet.
  2. Search, verify, clean, and conduct basic analysis on data gathered from social media scraping for wildlife listing.
  3. Search, verify, and clean data of wildlife seizures and other information from available sources of WCS and enter data into existing database systems of WCS;
  4. Research the assigned topic and synthesize collected information into WCS forms and templates;
  5. Conduct basic statistics and analysis based on the WCS’s available data and fill in WCS forms and templates;
  6. Perform other tasks as assigned by the direct supervisor.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

  • Vietnamese citizen living/studying/working in Ha Noi;
  • Studying/working field related to law, science, forestry, agriculture, environment, and information technology or other related fields;
  • Demonstrate skills in database management and record keeping;
  • Experience of gathering, structuring, statistics and analyzing, and visualizing data using word processing, spreadsheet software programs such as Excel is preferable;
  • Ability to respond effectively to time-sensitive demands & inquiries;
  • Ability to complete repetitive tasks such as data cleaning;
  • Ability to handle multitasking, prioritize, pay attention to details, and manage time efficiently;
  • Intermediate reading and written English skills;
  • Concern for wildlife conservation & environmental issues is an asset.
  • Experience in working with criminal case documents is an advantage.
  • Relevant work experience in an international business environment or, non-profit sector is an advantage.
