The Cluster “Environment and Climate Change” currently comprises a total of four teams in the thematic areas of climate policy, climate and agriculture coast and water, biodiversity and forests. The latter includes the project “Management and Protection of Protected areas with diverse ecosystems in Viet Nam” (MEPA), and “EU-Viet Nam Forest Support Programme” (FSP). The projects are implemented together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE). The projects are funded by BMZ and the EU and implemented by GIZ together with the Viet Nam Forestry Administration to enhance regulatory, institutional and technical capacities for implementing integrated management of forests at a landscape level.
The projects are looking for a qualified local candidate to fill the following position:
Project Officer
“Forest management, biodiversity conservation and capacity building”
Duty station: Hanoi
Duration: Starting from 01.10.2026 – 30.09.2029
Main responsibilities and tasks:
- Provide technical advice and on-the-job support to partnering forest owners, training institutions and other partners at provincial or central level in sustainable forest management, deforestation free supply chains and biodiversity conservation in close cooperation with the service provider involved in the implementation of the project.
- Support the digitalization of training modules in close exchange with forest training institutes and other service providers for capacity development for sustainable forest management.
- Conceptualization, preparation and implementation of activities, studies, events and trips including drafting and presenting concept notes, writing ToR for external experts, quality assurance of deliverables, and stakeholder liaison especially with partnering forest owners and provincial stakeholders.
- Design, prepare and implement workshops, seminars and other events including participant management.
- Ensure minimum standards of the projects are established, regularly reviewed and updated involving relevant colleagues, partners and the supervisor.
- Liaison and coordinate with partners, consultants, and target group in the area of responsibility.
- Coordinate project activities (design and quality control of activities), including technical supervision and coordination of the contracting procedures for consultants in close cooperation with other service providers involved in the implementation of the project.
- Conduct structure and regular monitoring in their working area, contributes to overall reporting and knowledge management.
- Compile, review and enhance project reports and products for distribution and publication.
- Capitalize on potentials to make positive contributions to gender equality in working area in close coordination with gender focal points.
- Prepare materials in English and Vietnamese and support with translations and interpretation as required.
- Perform other duties and tasks at the request of management.
Minimum requirements:
- Master’s degree in Biodiversity Conservation, Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources Management or related fields.
- 05 years of professional experience in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management, forestry, protected area management, ecological restoration or related fields.
- 02 years of experience in implementing and/or coordinating conservation, forestry or development projects.
- 02 years of practical experience in biodiversity/ecological assessment, monitoring, conservation planning and/or ecosystem restoration.
- 02 years of experience in international and technical development cooperation related to forestry or natural resource management.
- Demonstrated field experience in protected areas, forests and/or other natural ecosystems in Viet Nam, including experience working with local stakeholders
- Solid knowledge and practical experience in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management and/or forest conservation in Viet Nam.
- Good understanding of biodiversity threats, ecosystem functions and services, protected area management and ecosystem restoration.
- Ability to work in a structured, self-organized way and working autonomously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Vietnamese and English.
- Willingness to travel to project sites for work within Vietnam and possibly for short trips abroad, if necessary.
- Good digital literacy including knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and willingness to work with digital tools such as MS teams for day-to-day work. Understanding of e-learning platforms such as Moodle and modelling approaches is an advantage.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member, cooperatively and support other team members, show initiative when required.
- Ability to manage multiple demands and prioritise tasks, trouble-shoot, and to meet short- and long-term deadlines.
- Flexibility and willingness to perform other duties and work irregular hours when required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including patience, diplomacy, willingness to listen and show respect for colleagues.
